Some arrangements of molecules in water are more likely than others. Pretend you are a lipid. Take a set of old-fashioned matchsticks with colored tips, and arrange them so that their hydrophobic tails are protected from water. Decide whether the red tips are hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Then see how many arrangements can you make. There are at least three possible arrangements. You may want to move them around on your table or desk in 2-D arrangements, and then figure out what the shape would look like in 3-D.
