Predicting a change in protein conformation. Stacy, a Nashoba Brooks School student in Concord, MA, shows her team which way she predicts a string will curve if she changes a charge on a single bead. In this model, the string represents a short polypeptide chain and every bead an amino acid radical. She predicts the string will bend to the left. | |
Changing the Shape. When Stacy wanted to change the shape of the polymer, she assigned a new charge to a radical. Then Stacy clicks the "Rebuild" button, and the computer recalculates the electrostatic forces and presents the new shape (though the old shape can still be visible). Stacy can now see how good are her predictions. |
