Electrophoresis and Sickle Cell

In electrophoresis, paper (or agar or starch gel or cellulose acetate membranes) is used as a medium through which molecules are drawn by the application of an electric current.

Because Sickle Cell Hemoglobin (HbS) has a difference in charge, it moves more slowly through an alkaline solution with a current than normal hemoglobin. Other sickle cell disorders move at their own speeds through the solution and researchers can diagnosis the different ailments.
